Holy Child Senior Summits Mount Kilimanjaro
"On January 1st, I summited Mt. Kilimanjaro with my mother. We were woken up at 11:30pm on New Year’s eve, and we started our seven hour trek to the summit. The first five hours we hiked in the darkness with only our headlamps to light the way. I was bundled with layer after layer to stay in warm in the -20 degree temperature, and after two hours of this, I was questioning if I would make it. As we were approaching the summit, we watched the sun rise over the peak, and I began to feel a sense eagerness and excitement. Minutes from the top, as I was feeling the air become thinner, I could see the sign stating we had reached the “roof of Africa.” It was in this moment where I felt the largest sense of accomplishment I have ever felt. I’m not sure if it was the overwhelming vastness of the Tazania bush, or the lack of oxygen in my lungs, but I felt exhilarated. I am so grateful for the opportunity to have this experience and share it with my mother."
