Middle School Arts
Visual and performing arts are a big part of student life in the middle school at Holy Child. Through courses and electives during the school day and students have many opportunities to make the arts part of their experience at Holy Child.
Visual Arts
In middle school, students will learn to become observers of their everyday worlds. Making art stimulates thoughtful inquiry and sharpens careful perception. Students will work to capture the details that make each living thing, event, or place unique. Students will discover that ideas can be interpreted in many different ways, and art making is a means to expressing new ways of thinking and feeling. Through exploration of media such as painting, drawing, printmaking, collage, and sculpture, students develop an understanding of the Elements of Art and the Principles of Design, deepen their expressive and critical faculties, hone their art skills, and develop confidence in their creative capacities. While engaged in the art making process, students will draw inspiration from a global array of artists.

Music
Middle school music students get creative and explore a variety of instruments such as piano, ukulele, drums, and voice, learning songs by ear and reading music. Weekly listening logs and projects introduce students to new repertoire in genres such as: classical, jazz, folk, pop, rock, and world music. Music technology is used to create original compositions and explore recording techniques.
MS Band is open to students with a desire to play instruments and build on music theory skills for grades 6-8.
MS Chorus is an exciting ensemble open to students with a desire to sing and learn, grades 6-8. Students build community through singing together, develop vocal tone and technique, and explore a wide variety of artists and genres (classical, pop, jazz, world, folk, etc.) Songwriting, music theory, and basic piano skills are introduced. Performance opportunities include masses, open-mics, Christmas concerts, and Evening of the Arts.
DANCE
Our middle school dance classes introduce students to a variety of dance styles including jazz, lyrical, and hip-hop. Students are led through a dynamic warm-up of stretches/strengthening exercises before practicing technical skills across the floor (including turns, kicks, and leaps). Informal performance opportunities are available for 6th grade students in school and throughout the community. 7th and 8th graders have the opportunity to perform in formal Dance Concerts and the Evening of the Arts. Our dance classes aim to promote self-confidence and prepare students for higher level dance classes in the Upper School.
Theatre
All students participate in the annual Middle School Fall Musical — on stage or behind the scenes — building confidence, responsibility, and leadership. Roles include Cast, Tech Crew, Stage Management, Costumes, Props, Marketing, Box Office, Concessions, and more.
