Second Lady Jill Biden: 2016 Graduation Speaker
On Friday, June 3, Connelly School of the Holy Child held their 2016 commencement exercises at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church in Potomac, Md.
As Holy Child’s 2016 Commencement speaker, Second Lady of the United States Jill Biden shared her advice to graduates, drawing from a lifetime of stories. "You never know where life might lead you," was the day’s refrain as she shared how she and Joe Biden, the then beloved senator of Delaware, met and married. She also explained how she first found out about a new change, Senator Biden becoming Barack Obama's running mate. Her impassioned care for young women was clear as she talked about her career path and working as a full-time teacher. She encouraged the students to be advocates for their own future and to find people to support them along that path, as she has found on her own life.
"We are thrilled that Dr. Biden helped us celebrate all the accomplishments of the Class of 2016," said Head of School Dr. Shannon Gomez. "Her work as a teacher and as a positive change agent in the world makes her a great example of how to live out the motto of Holy Child, to live a life of actions, not words.”
Prior to graduation, Dr. Biden met privately with the Class of 2016, and after her address she graciously participated in handing out diplomas with Head of School Dr. Shannon Gomez and Chair of the Board Nancy Binnie.
Holy Child graduates are compassionate women of action, who possess the skills, character and faith to lead fulfilling lives of intellectual, spiritual, and social purpose. The Class of 2016 heads to college with 60 percent receiving merit aid and many achieving higher Advanced Placement scores than 80 percent of their peers in the Washington DC area and nationwide.
