CELEBRATE HOLY CHILD
BLUE/GOLD GAMES, family barbecue, Alumnae Reception, Cardinal McCarrick mass and brunch--it will be a fun weekend to remember. RSVP NOW for Sunday's 50th anniversary event; don't miss chatting with former principals and faculty and meeting Sisters of the Holy Child Jesus visiting from our Provincial headquarters. There will also be displays of old uniforms and early publications, and a "story booth" to capture your memories. Celebrate with new friends and share memories with the old--we have hundreds of attendees already confirmed, so don't miss out.

Tiger Club Social--TONIGHT--RSVP
Join other sports-minded parents and coaches at tonight's TIGER CLUB social, to be held at the home of Colleen (Christmas, Class of 1987) and Rich Gardella, parents of Casey (2012), 5989 Searl Terrace, Bethesda, MD 20816. It starts at 7:00 p.m. PLEASE RSVP if you're planning to come; contact Tiger Club President Kris Rowan (Class of 1982), 301-526-5181, Krisrowan@verizon.net. All are welcome, Middle and Upper School parents (no children). Come and meet the coaches, hear the exciting plans for the year, and meet fellow sports  fans.
WALKATHON NEXT WEEK
Our HELP THE HOMELESS WALKATHON is next FRIDAY, OCTOBER 7.
Students received walkathon forms in homeroom (the forms require a parent/guardian signature). We ask that the girls please return these forms by Tuesday, October 4.  Please include the $15 registration fee or sponsors/donations of any amount made payable to “Fannie Mae Help the Homeless/CFNCR.” EVEN IF YOU CANNOT DONATE (some donate more, so we can generally cover our walkers), please send in a form. If we document every walker, the donations increase. The more walkers, the more money that the Fannie Mae Foundation will donate to the shelters, New Endeavors by Women and Bethesda Cares!  On behalf of our sponsored agencies, thank you for your support!
50th Anniversary Weekend
There's still time to RSVP to the 50th Anniversary Mass & Brunch, so plan to bring your friends and family. The Mass is Sunday, October 2, with His Eminence Cardinal Theodore McCarrick as our presider, and the community brunch to follow. Scores of alumnae will be joining us as well, as well as numerous sisters from our provincial headquarters. Great displays are already up around the school, with more to follow, about our rich history.

Make it a weekend--Saturday's events are the fun contests for the girls. The Blue/Gold Games roll out at 2:30 p.m. on October 1, with a family barbecue to follow.

Join us for the Big Game!
Upper School students will play Powder Puff football; Middle School students will play soccer. No need to worry about the SAT, here is the order of play:

2:30                      Warm ups
3:00 to 3:20          Blue juniors vs. gold juniors
3:20 to 3:40          Blue freshmen vs. gold freshmen
3:40 to 4:00          Middle School soccer: blue vs. gold
4:00 to 4:20          Blue sophomores vs. gold sophomores
4:20 to 4:40          Blue seniors vs. gold seniors

An all-years' alumnae reception will be held in the library at 5:00 p.m., with ceremonial willow planting.

UPPER SCHOOL NEWS
~Freshman parents: If you have not yet signed up for your meeting with Teri Boragno, please send Shannon Van Why an email, svanwhy@holychild.org. We don't want the year to go much further without checking in.

~Spring Break Spain Trip. We're going to Spain! Information is now available from Sra. Meyer regarding the junior/senior European trip. Talk it over with your daughter to assess interest; there is a $200 savings if we book before October 1.
~Testing: There are still a few slots left for the PSAT, Saturday, Oct. 15. Please contact Teri Boragno for information at Tboragno@holychild.org

The girls know that they should sign up ahead of time, and work around classes to meet with college representatives who visit campus. Meetings are held in the college counseling conference room, off of the lobby. Any questions, please contact Meg Mayo, mmayo@holychild.org.

MIDDLE SCHOOL NEWS
MINI-WALKATHON for the HOMELESS
For the schoolwide walkathon next Friday, October 7, the Middle School is walking for Bethesda Cares--our 15th year supporting this shelter. We are looking for 100 percent participation; if everyone participates (and turns in their form to that effect) they will receive a tag day in October.

EIGHTH-GRADE TESTING
This year eighth grade students will take the SSAT Benchmark test during the morning of October 19.   Letters concerning the test were mailed home today; it covers a broad range of subjects and skills, including word analysis, vocabulary, spelling, language mechanics, reading comprehension and mathematical computation. The length of each sub-test ranges from 30 to 40 minutes. There is really no way in which your daughter can prepare for this test, nor does she need to study in advance.  Please contact Mrs. Hopkins with any questions, mhopkins@holychild.org.

FIELD TRIP
The seventh grade will be making a trip to St. Mary’s City on October 19, 7:30 am – 4 pm.  Rain or shine!  More information will be coming home with your daughters in the weeks to come, but we want to let you know early so you can plan for the extended school day.

Book Club Back on Track
Our Book Club gets back in gear Thursday, October 6 at 7:00 p.m. in the library. It's not stuffy, it's not pretentious, it's just a nice evening out with fine conversation--yes, we do discuss the books, but don't berate you if you haven't finished. Our summer reading included two diverse yet fascinating novels: The Paris Wife and The Art of Racing in the Rain. Who knew that Hemingway's life and a dog as narrator could make for such great reading? RSVP (and send your ideas on future reading) to Meg Mayo (mmayo@holychild.org); if you can bring a beverage or snack, let her know that as well.

RESULTS
Cross Country
Holy Child Cross Country runners were quite competitive at Saturday's Landon Invitational. The course was slightly saturated due to the rain, however, the highly competitive meet--with a total of 100 runners--went on without incident. Leading the way for the Tigers on Saturday was sophomore Dorothy Hastings, who ran 53rd overall in a time of 24:51 an excellent time on a muddy course. Freshman Aoife Magner, running with competitive and seasoned runners in a tough contest, nevertheless finished 59th overall with a time of 25:09, a very respectable time and effort given the condition of the course. In her second-ever cross country meet, freshman Ana Melchior held her own, gaining valuable experience; she ran a personal best time of 28:42, eclipsing her previous time of 31:02. An excellent improvement for an athlete with very little experience in the sport of cross country. All the athletes had great family support cheering them on from start to finish. Thanks to the parents for all their support. Way to go Tigers!!--Coach Dennis V. Coleman

SANDWICHES FOR THE HOMELESS
Join in on our thirty-year-old service tradition and make sandwiches for Martha's Table in Washington, DC. Each Friday, we gather hundreds (we hope) of meat, cheese and/or PB&J sandwiches (no condiments, please) for the homeless of our region. Make them at home (you can just put the individually wrapped sandwiches back in the bread bag) and deliver them to homeroom. Help the less fortunate!
Is Your Child Anxious?
Consider attending this seminar held by the National Institute on Mental Health on October 20, 2011. Download the flyer here.
DID YOU MISS IT?
We will use this space to point you to articles of interest that faculty and staff have come across in local and national media. The articles will also be posted on the Parents Resources section of the website.
