A Cardinal Day
We had a marvelous kick off to our 50th Anniversary year with our Mass of the Holy Spirit on Friday. Cardinal Wuerl was inspiring, as he spoke of Catholic education as a "gift" to your daughters and congratulatory on our five decades in existence. He was especially gracious, as he shook hands with each and every student and Mass attendee as they left the gym. The girls were surprised (as was Mrs. Appel) as he noted the tradition to bestow a day off to the students! Stay tuned--we have the whole year to offer it.
"Mission Effectiveness" kicks into gear.
Meetings are underway to review our mission and our efforts to maintain the standards set by Cornelia Connelly. For now, just remember that we strive daily to work on our seven goals: Faith ~ Community ~ Challenging Creative Curriculum ~ Justice, Peace & Compassion ~ Dignity ~ Fulfillment ~ Future

~Clubs Assembly. Your daughter will have the opportunity to sign up for clubs on September 21 when all the clubs will present at an assembly. ~Junior Service Requirement: For all parents of Juniors: Please note that every Junior is required to fulfill a 30-hour (direct) service requirement during this school year. This week, we will be providing each girl with a packet that includes suggested service sites, a letter to every family outlining expectations, a service contract, and a 1st-Quarter time sheet. Book Club Back on Track |
Our Moms' Book Club (with apologies to dads; if you'd like to be included, please tell us!) gets back in gear this Thursday, October 6 at 7:00 p.m. in the library. It's not stuffy, it's not pretentious, it's just a nice evening out with fine conversation--yes, we do discuss the books, but don't berate you if you haven't finished. Our summer reading included two diverse yet fascinating novels: The Paris Wife and The Art of Racing in the Rain. Who knew that Hemingway's life and a dog as narrator could make for such great reading? RSVP (and send your ideas on future reading) to Meg Mayo ( mmayo@holychild.org).

HC Equestrians in the Ribbons On Sunday, September 11, Holy Child’s JV/Middle School Equestrian Team came home with the Championship Ribbon–winning the entire show. Out of three divisions at the Interschool Horse Show, Holy Child topped the other ten teams by winning Grand Champion and other ribbons. Sarah Holladay ’16 won the Inermediate Division, Mackenzie Myers ’18 (at right, with pony Gossip Girl) won the Maiden Division, and Maya Whitaker ’17 narrowly missed winning the Novice Division. Also bringing points and ribbons to honor Holy Child were team captain Hope Thomas ’15, Lizzy Cornfeld ’16, Bernadette Coyle ’16, Rose Meima ’17, and Ella Sullivan ’17. Congrats to the Riding Tigers of HC! You don’t just ROCK, you RIDE!--Anne Bolen
Cross-Country The Varsity Cross Country Team opened the season with an excellent showing at Episcopal High School in Alexandria, Virginia. Several schools in attendance were St. Andrew's School, National Cathedral School, and the host school, Episcopal High School. There were a total of 70 to 80 runners competing. Aoife Manger led the Tigers to a top 23 finish as an standout freshman. An outstanding performance. Sophomore Dorothy Hastings finished with an impressive 32nd-place finish again in this field of at least 80 runners. Very new to cross country, freshman Anna Melchior showed great competitive zeal competing in her first-ever cross country meet, finishing very strong: a top 60 finish. Go, Tigers!!!--Coach Dennis Coleman

| | | | | HOLY CHILD NEEDS YOU!
Our volunteer forms came home, and still we don't have many signed up. Remember, there truly is something for everyone, whether you can give a little or a lot, want to use your talents at home or at school. Click HERE to sign up online! Contact Mary Ellen Jorgensen about volunteer slots: mejorgensen@norcotech.com.
50th anniversary: Volunteers are needed for our 50th anniversary celebration. We need a volunteer to make a Home Depot run on Friday, September 30 to pick up mums. Are you the next Annie Leibovitz or Ansel Adams? If so, let us know if you can help us on October 2 by taking photos of our guests, or assisting with videos. Also, greeters are needed on Sunday, October 2, when our guests arrive and during the brunch to help gather groups for photos. Help with set up on Saturday? There will be plenty to do, and we can split up the tasks.
Library Assistants: Volunteers are needed for the library! Help shelve books, display materials, and process new acquisitions. Interested in scheduling some hours? Contact the librarian, Sarah Stonesifer, at sstonesifer@holychild.org.

SANDWICHES FOR THE HOMELESS |
Last week's top sandwich contributors were, in third place, Ms. Sutton's homeroom, TK; in 2nd place, Ms. Whitaker's homeroom, 12C, and topping them all: 11E, Madame Pilkerton's homeroom, with an average of 4.8 sandwiches per person. Join in on our thirty-year-old service tradition and make sandwiches for Martha's Table in Washington, DC. Each Friday, we gather hundreds (we hope) of meat, cheese and/or PB&J sandwiches (no condiments, please) for the homeless of our region. Make them at home (you can just put the individually wrapped sandwiches back in the bread bag) and deliver them to homeroom. Help the less fortunate!
