Week two--school kicks into high gear.
Take some time to look over your daughter's schedules, her teacher's pages, and plan ahead for a great semester...and a wonderful 50th anniversary year for Holy Child. Make your plans to join us, and Cardinal Wuerl, at our opening Mass this Friday at 10:00 a.m.

This is the year of "Mission Effectiveness."
You'll be hearing those words a lot over the next several months. Today, the girls got an introduction at Homeroom in the Gym, and you will be hearing about how you might participate in this important process. For now, just remember that we strive daily
to work on our seven goals:
Faith ~ Community ~ Challenging Creative Curriculum ~ Justice, Peace & Compassion ~ Dignity ~ Fulfillment ~ Future
This FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 9, at 10:00 a.m. in the gym, we will celebrate the "Mass of the Holy Spirit." This special liturgy, a tradition to kick off the school year, is even more significant this year, as we launch both our 50th Anniversary and our Mission Effectiveness process. Please note that ALL students (including the seniors) must come in perfect uniform, hopefully nicely pressed and clean. (Please refer to page 9 of the Student Handbook for the particulars: Yellow skirt or kilt; white or navy Holy Child polo shirt; navy or gray Holy Child sweatshirt--no hood; monogrammed Holy Child navy sweater vest; Holy Child logo socks; solid black or brown soft-soled shoes with fully enclosed heel no more than 1” high or predominantly white sneakers, running shoe style [Middle School only].)

This is a special occasion as we welcome the Cardinal and other visitors, and we want them to see us at our best. This is primarily an event for the school, but parents are welcome should they want to experience Mass with Cardinal Wuerl.
SALLY FOSTER IN THE HOUSE
Yes, Sally Foster is here, with even more opportunities to get your fall gift items (wrap and more). The girls brought home their packets last week. Order your cookie dough and wrap (much can be done online); the local Entertainment Book was sent home as a preview. If you decide NOT TO PURCHASE the Entertainment Book ($30), please return it to the school; do not recycle. Take a look at all, and be sure to contribute to the easiest fundraiser of the year.
HOT LUNCH...DON'T FORGET TO ORDER
Hopefully, you've discovered the hot lunch sign-up page, and have ordered for September. Remember, our program is even bigger and better this year, with numerous buying and eating options. (You do have to order a week in advance, however, so you have to be a bit more organized.) PLEASE NOTE: if you are interested in the FULL YEAR option, a great way to save, your deadline is next FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 16, so go online now. It's so easy to order; Click here to go to the hot lunch page on our site for the information on how to register, and the link to the ordering site. Eat well! Direct your questions to Diane Boragno, dboragno@holychild.org.
50th Anniversary Invites
Watch your mailbox for 50th Anniversary news! Your invitations for our 50th Anniversary Mass will be arriving any day now. Please plan to attend our Mass on Sunday, October 2, with His Eminence Cardinal Theodore McCarrick, our presider, and the community brunch to follow. We are hoping many alumnae will be joining us as well.
DINNER TO GO...COOKING HELP!

If there are nights you don’t feel like cooking, we can help! Make a plan for the second Wednesday of every month to have us do the cooking for you. Wednesday, September 14 is the first date for Holy Child’s Dinner to Go! This week’s dinner for four includes your choice of veggie or meat lasagna, Caesar salad, fresh baked bread and chocolate chip cookies – enough to feed a family of four (or two with leftovers) for just $30.  Dinner is provided by Vignola’s Catering, our popular lunch caterer, so we know your family will love it. Your meal will be available for pick up between 3pm and 5:30pm. Meals for Middle School students can be picked up just outside Ms. Gaiser’s office and dinners for Upper School students can be picked up just inside the Chapel doors. This is a Prom Night fundraiser, one that you and your family will benefit from as you check off your dinner plans for that night. Click here to reserve your dinner now! Questions? Contact Shannon VanWhy at svanwhy@holychild.org.

UPPER SCHOOL NEWS
~Spring Break Spain Trip. Information is now available from Sra. Meyer regarding the junior/senior European trip, this year to Spain. Talk it over with your daughter to assess interest; there is a $200 savings if we book before October 1.

~Clubs Assembly. Your daughter will have the opportunity to sign up for clubs on September 21 when all the clubs will present at an assembly. Should she have an interest that is not yet served in the school, have her discuss her club idea with Ms. Boragno before that day. There is something for everyone at Holy Child!

~ Drivers: PLEASE SLOW DOWN! Parents, please set a good example for your daughters and drive slowly throughout our campus. We have a number of students crossing the driveway during the school day and we're so worried someone may get hurt. Please exercise caution coming and going to and through Holy Child. If your daughter is a driver, please ask her to buckle up before she leaves her parking space and to drive slowly.
~Junior Service Requirement: For all parents of Juniors: Please note that every Junior is required to fulfill a 30-hour (direct) service requirement during this school year. This week, we will be providing each girl with a packet that includes suggested service sites, a letter to every family outlining expectations, a service contract, and a 1st-Quarter time sheet. Please see those packets for more details and information; contact the religion department, Mr. Ed Kent (ekent@holychild.org) or Mrs. Meg Russell (mrussell@holychild.org), with questions or concerns. Thank you!
MIDDLE SCHOOL NEWS
Author in the House
Laura Elliot, author of Annie Between the States and Under a War Torn Sky (7th and 8th grade summer reading, respectively) will be visiting the Middle School on Friday, September 16, from 9 a.m. to noon. She will meet with the seventh and eighth grades and be present in the library during break and lunch to speak with any additional interested students. Read more about the event on the attached flyer, and more about Laura on her website. Here is the order form for the books--you must order by this Friday to get in time for signing.
Middle School Back to School Night
This THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 8, come to meet your daughter's teachers, walk to her classes, get a sense of what her day is like, hear the exciting plans for the year. The evening begins at 7:00 p.m. in the gym.
Field Trips
The Middle School plans two major trips for the students at the end of the month, important bonding experiences for all. The 8th graders will leave for Ellis Island on Thursday, September 22, and return on Friday, September 23, at 4:00 p.m. That same Friday, the 6th and 7th grade girls will head out to an all-day ropes course.
BOOK CLUB BACK ON TRACK
Our Moms Book Club (with apologies to dads; if you'd like to be included, need to tell us!) gets back in gear this Thursday, October 6 at 7:00 p.m. in the library. It's not stuffy, it's not pretentious, it's just a nice evening out with fine conversation--yes, we do discuss the books, but don't berate you if you haven't finished. Our summer reading included two diverse yet fascinating novels: The Paris Wife and The Art of Racing in the Rain. Who knew that Hemingway's life and a dog as narrator could make for such great reading? RSVP (and send your ideas on future reading) to Meg Mayo (mmayo@holychild.org.

Homework Club: Help at the Ready
Homework Club has begun, so check in if your daughter needs a bit of nudge to get her work done. The Academic Support Office will again be offering homework assistance and/or a quiet place to work on Mondays through Thursdays from 3:30-4:30 p.m. Note that Homework Club is for Middle School and Upper School students; they will get individual attention as needed. Please come down to the basement of Connelly Hall and join us. Any questions, please write to Kathy Famulare, kfamulare@holychild.org

VOLUNTEER CENTRAL
HOLY CHILD NEEDS YOU!
Our volunteer forms came home, and still we don't have many signed up. Remember, there truly is something for everyone, whether you can give a little or a lot, want to use your talents at home or at school. Click HERE to sign up online!

Also, the TIGER SHOP is in dire need of assistance. Pick a day or several; it's just two short hours to be here, and you get to see the girls while you're here. Contact Mary Fairbanks, ltjkfair@comcast.net to select a convenient time.
SANDWICHES FOR THE HOMELESS
Join in on our thirty-year-old service tradition and make sandwiches for Martha's Table in Washington, DC. Each Friday, we gather hundreds (we hope) of meat, cheese and/or PB&J sandwiches (no condiments, please) for the homeless of our region. Make them at home (you can just put the individually wrapped sandwiches back in the bread bag) and deliver them to home room. (There is a running contest.) Some home rooms will allow assembly in their rooms on Friday morning. Help the less fortunate!
NEW FACES ON CAMPUS
We are happy to have new faculty and staff, and hope you've had a chance to meet them; if not, Back to School nights are a great opportunity. We'll introduce them to you in this space in weeks to come.
Director of Admissions
Holy Child is thrilled to welcome our new director of admissions and financial aid, Pat Harden, who started with us in August. (Luckily, we didn’t have to bid farewell to former admissions head, Meg Mayo, who has simply moved across the hall to assume the college counseling duties.) Pat, who has her MSW and BA from Smith College, brings years of experience, both in admissions and recruiting as well as dealing with emotional and learning issues. She has served numerous private schools in our region, from Burgundy School and Flint Hill to, most recently, Madeira School in admissions and as a learning specialist. Pat’s educational philosophy will serve her and Holy Child well as she promotes our program to potential applicants. Her statement says, in part, “A strong school will: ensure all involved know and are enthusiastic about the schools mission; provide support to the adults teaching the students to help them understand the individual educational needs of each student and how to meet them; reach out to parents on a consistent basis to ensure they are connected to the educational process and understand its benefit to their children; and ensure that each student feels a personal connection to teachers, peers and the institution as a whole.” Please be sure to stop in and say hello (her office is to the right off of the lobby) and definitely plan to help out at her first Open House, Sunday, October 23.
