 FEBRUARY ARRIVES!
Winter's shortest month has arrived, and the picnic tables are getting plenty of use--it feels like May! Will we avoid a repeat of last year's "snowmageddon"? Though we all could use a snow day, even the girls would want it to wait until after next week. As we celebrate Groundhog Day and the feast day of St. Blaise in the next two days (not literally, although some classes may find ways to work both in), we also check in with our teachers on the progress of our girls, and look forward to the biggest week of the year--SPIRIT WEEK.
See the details on both below.
GALA WINE BASH--TIME IS RUNNING OUT!

For those new parents, here is how it works—and remember, if you can’t come that night, you can still contribute Donate a bottle of wine, AND bring a bottle to share with friends. We’ve made it easy for you; you don’t even have to raid your wine cellar or wander through all the aisles at the wine store in a quandary. We’ve already done the shopping for you with our own wine expert. Just CLICK HERE, select the wine(s) you wish to donate, give your credit card number, and we will pick it up for you and add it to the cellar. You can RSVP at the same time. Father-Daughter Service Project

Thanks to all who have been helping out on the
Washington Middle School for Girls SERVICE PROJECT. Our January painting day went a long way to finishing up the renovation project, but we will need more sessions to complete the job.  We need help to finish painting walls and door frames. We also have to give the space a thorough cleaning and remove debris and unwanted office furniture from the space. (*If you have a vehicle that we can use to haul away furniture, please let me know. We're also looking for someone who is able to snake out the drain in the kitchen.) Please consider signing up for a few hours to help THIS SATURDAY, February 4 (the second date is TBD): www.signupgenius.com/go/wmsg. Email Tom Serena if you have any questions: tomserena@yahoo.com.

You should already have received confirmation of your time to meet with your Middle School student and her teachers--remember they are between 4:00 and 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 2, or Friday, Feb. 3, from 8:00 a.m. to noon. The girls should come in uniform for their conference, which is the only time they need to be here (there are no MS classes on Friday). CONTACT Mrs. Orban (ext. 2230 or vorban@holychild.org) if you have a question.

Middle School Music Circus: It’s time to mark your calendars for the 5th Anniversary Edition of the Middle School Connelly Music Circus. The performances will take place on Thursday, March 22 at 7:00 p.m., with a daytime edition on Friday, March 23 at 10:00 a.m. You won’t want to miss it! This is an essential part of the eighth grade science curriculum and all eighth grade students are expected to attend. Echo Hill, located in Worton, Maryland, is a nature camp overlooking the Chesapeake Bay. For five exhilarating days, the girls will learn about science and ecology, history and the human environment, themselves and each other. Echo Hill provides positive experiences in the outdoors that are exciting, interesting and fun. The outdoor classes help the girls explore the colors, sounds, and smells of the Chesapeake Bay and supplement the eighth grade science curriculum.

YOUNG SCHOLARS PROGRAM: The 2012 application for the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Young Scholars Program, one of the most generous awards for outstanding seventh-grade students, opened on Friday, January 20. Those selected receive financial support for educational and extracurricular activities, as well as one-on-one help applying to high schools, colleges, summer programs, and more.

There were many exciting speakers and the girls enjoyed speaking and hearing from them as well as their mentors. This next program is open to the first 30 girls! The attached flyer has all the information regarding the application process and contact information, but if you have any questions, feel free to contact Mary Ann Glueckert masglueckert@verizon.net.

WEEKEND SPRING SOFTBALL AT HOLY CHILD
Don’t miss out on all the fun of Koa Sports League’s Girls Spring Softball right here on the turf at Holy Child! Koa's girls softball/modified fast pitch Mudcat League introduces girls to the fundamentals of softball. Registration is open and all interested girls in grades 2-8 are welcome! As with other Koa programs, we handle all of the player development while you– the parents – get to sit on the sidelines and cheer! Our professional coaches, many of whom played women’s softball at the collegiate level, work with the players both in their pre-game warm-up and coach the teams during the Sunday games at Holy Child. The girls also have to option to attend our midweek practice clinics and work on more softball skills with our coaches -- all included in the fee. Practice clinic sites are TBD. You may register individually, with a few friends, or put together a Holy Child team. Teams will have 13 players and are grouped by grade in school. Games start 3/2 and the season goes through 5/13. Easy online registration and more information is at the Koa website, www.KoaSports.org.

RESULTS
BASKETBALL

The MS team beat a dramatically taller Stone Ridge B team with a 4th quarter surge to come back and win 17-12. Strong defense held the Gators scoreless in the second half, except for two foul shots. Lauren Anastasi led all scorers with 7 points, with Rita Tomon also hitting the box score with 4 points and strong point guard play.

Varsity had two tough losses, to Sidwell and NCS, but remains in the hunt for the division lead. They are currently in second place in the ISL A division, tied with NCS (both with losses to the same teams). Coach Ready sends out a big THANK YOU to the amazing number of fans, upwards of 50 students, who traveled to NCS to cheer on the Tigers.

The Fund for Holy Child
Thank you to all the families who have made a gift to The Fund for Holy Child!

   ●  As of  Friday, The Fund had raised $406,427 toward the total goal of $500,000. Therefore, we are currently at 81% of the goal for the year.  With your help, we know we can reach our $500,000 goal!
·       ● This puts us ahead of 2011's total (of $369,969) by $38,468 or 10.45%.  Our goal is 100% parent participation--current parent giving is 41%, with the 8th grade now pulling up to equal the freshmen class, both leading the class competition at 50%. Very exciting! J A reminder: The winning class by May 1 will receive an ice cream social sponsored by the Development Office.

Current parents have contributed $152,579 to date versus $116,257 at this time last year – an increase of 31%! .

The Leadership Reception for donors of $1,500 or more has been scheduled for Thursday, May 3 at the home of Courtney and David Straus. Be on the lookout for a Save the Date card, and a formal invitation if you are one of that group.

Please note these numbers on the Jumbotron as you drive in each morning...we appreciate what you do. Please remember that any size gift makes a difference. As the School applies for foundation grants, the overall percentage of support to The Fund is a critical measure of the School's strength. Please also be sure to see if your employer will match your charitable donation--this can make a big difference in the impact of your gift!

● Please click here to make your gift online via credit card.
● Checks can be sent to school to the attention of Dillon Cox, Director of Annual Giving.

For further information, please contact Dillon Cox (dcox@holychild.org), Director of the Annual Fund, or Suzi Montes de Oca, Development Director (smontes@holychild.org).

Thank you again!

Remember,
   Every gift makes a difference.
       Every girl makes a difference.

Don’t pay that annoying five cent fee for a bag!  Take a Holy Child reusable bag the next time you shop.  It is sturdy, attractive, large, and is another way to have Holy Child’s name out in the community.  Bags are available through the Tiger Shop. The cost is $2.50 to go green and save!

HOT LUNCH--DID YOU FORGET?
If you've forgotten to order lunch for this month, note that both February and March menus are up. We will be featuring minestrone soup on Fridays, will celebrate the beginning of Spirit Week with "Breakfast for Lunch" on Roll-Out-of-Bed Day, and during International Week, we will travel to Italy, Asia and Mexico. Sign up now so your daughters don't miss out of the fun.

SEARCH and HELP

Online shopping can help Holy Child! All you need to do is search for items through GoodSearch/GoodShop; we have partnered with them for the past few years to generate funds without pain for you and the school.

How much money could this generate for my school? Fifty percent of the revenue generated from the sponsored search advertisers on GoodSearch is shared with the charity, school or nonprofit organization--just indicate Holy Child as the recipient. Even though it's just around a penny a search, when you're shopping for items, they can add up quickly. (FYI: image, video, Yellow Pages, and site-specific searches are not included.) The school receives checks each year form the Good Search organization. It’s easy to register – do some “good” for Holy Child! www.goodsearch.com
