MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL!
Our Lessons and Carols liturgy on Friday morning will celebrate the joy of the season (the identity of the Advent Angels will also be revealed). May you all find your own special joys as you share gifts and prayers, fun and frolic, and two full weeks of your daughters around the house.
And have a beautiful New Year!

ADVENT ANGELS
It's that special time of year,
   Advent Angels are here
A little kindness, a secret touch,
A hint of Christmas, but not too much!

Here is the schedule for the rest of the week:
Thursday, December 15: Bring them a small gift (no more than $5.00)
Friday, December 15: Bring in donation of underwear and socks for New Endeavors
Parents Association Coffee--TOMORROW
Join the monthly gathering for information and conversation as the Parents Association sponsors the December Coffee, Thursday, December 15, at 8:15 a.m. Come hear Holy Child Parent Tom Pecoraro, who is a Montgomery County police officer and owner of I Drive Smart, speak to us about preparing our girls to drive, even as early as Middle School, and how to help them once they're driving. He'll also discuss the dangers of distracted driving, remind parents that they need to model good driving behavior, and how the rules of the road have changed since parents learned to drive.
UPPER SCHOOL NEWS
SENIORS: The college freshmen are coming! The seniors will be able to ask all of their questions when the Class of 2011 returns during J block to talk to this college-bound class. Wednesday, January 4, 12:40 p.m.

Juniors:   Please remember, there is an upcoming deadline (January 12th) for 10 more hours for your daughter's junior service requirement! The goal is for 15 hours to be done by mid-year, so 10 hours should be recorded on the Quarter 2 Service Timesheet and turned in with a one-two page reflection paper on Thursday, the 12th. Questions or concerns? Please speak to Ed Kent (ekent@holychild.org) or Meg Russell (mrussell@holychild.org)

Junior and Senior Parents: Please remember to check and register with Family Connections. (You received instructions previously.) This will be the major communication vehicle from the College Counselor. You don’t want to miss valuable information.

Juniors and Seniors: Interested in attending the March for Life on Monday, January 24th? We have tickets for the Rally/Mass at the Verizon Center, and then we will march to the Supreme Court before returning to Holy Child. This event requires being at school at 6am and returning around 4:00 p.m. For more details and information, as well as to request a ticket, please contact Meg Russell at mrussell@holychild.org or stop by the religion office. (Note: we regret that this year, Freshmen and Sophomores are encouraged to stay at school for standardized testing.)

Parents: We are in need of two additional chaperones for the March for Life! It is an early and long day, but also an incredible witness of respect for life and the energy and passion of teenagers from all over the country! If you are interested, please contact Meg Russell in the religion department (mrussell@holychild.org). Thank you!

HOLY CHILD AND MOAS
Congratulations to the Upper School team who headed to the Model Organization of American States (MOAS) assembly last week, with hundreds of other students from schools across the nation. Our school represented Colombia. The event takes place in the OAS building, so the girls got the taste of a real diplomatic experience. It was a great learning moment and fun time for all. Ask them all about it:  seniors Emma Bulleit, Katrina Dzyak, and Caroline Greene; juniors Amanda Arcidiacono,  Ashley Murray, and Shey Van Bruygom; and sophomores Ashley Arcidiacono and Andrea Manchester. And also thank Sra. Meyer for her help and support!
Book Club Meeting Set
Our next adult book club meeting, has been set for after the holidays:
       Wednesday, January 11th at 7:00.

So in all your spare time with the kids off, dip into our two selections:
Mothers and Daughters by Rae Meadows
         Emma by Jane Austen
Happy reading! Questions or comments, please contact Meg Mayo, mmayo@holychild.org.
MIDDLE SCHOOL NEWS
Eighth Grade Parents – Mark your calendars! This year’s trip to Echo Hill Outdoor School will take place March 26-30. This is an essential part of the eighth grade science curriculum and all eighth grade students are expected to attend. Echo Hill, located in Worton, Maryland, is a nature camp overlooking the Chesapeake Bay. For five exhilarating days, the girls will learn about science and ecology, history and the human environment, themselves and each other. Echo Hill provides positive experiences in the outdoors that are exciting, interesting and fun. The outdoor classes help the girls explore the colors, sounds, and smells of the Chesapeake Bay and supplement the eighth grade science curriculum.

WOMEN IN TECHNOLOGY--SPRING PROGRAM
The spring session of Women in Technology's Mentor Protege program is ready to hear from interested parties. The girls (including senior Maddy Glueckert) just finished our fall program, and the girls have been invited to the White House to discuss the importance of mentoring for high school girls with the Council on Women and Girls. We had many exciting speakers and the girls enjoyed speaking and hearing from them as well as their mentors. We are opening this next program to the first 30 girls! The attached flyer has all the information regarding the application process and contact information, but if you have any questions, feel free to contact Mary Ann Glueckert masglueckert@verizon.net.
RESULTS
BASKETBALL
VARSITY had a wild game at Stone Ridge last week, staying with the ISL A team throughout the game before finally falling by four points at the end. Talley Britt led that game with 16 points, 3 rebounds; Colby Evans followed with 15 points, 13 rebounds. Saturday's contest against Episcopal on their home court was much more lopsided, with Holy Child on top by a score of 68-45. Eileen Williams led all scorers with 15 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, and 4 steals; Colby Evans put in 13 points, grabbed 5 rebounds, had 2 assists and 3 steals. Varsity was all over Maret on Monday, winning by a score of 70-30. Holy Child was led by Colby Evans with 16 points, 9 rebounds, 3 steals; Talley Britt with 14 points, 5 steals; Mary Claire Byrne with 11 points, 5 rebounds, 5 steals; and Daniela Falcone with 11 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists, 4 steals and 1 block.

JV lost 68-32 to Stone Ridge; Jori Contee-Staten and Sophia Abshire each had 8 points

EQUESTRIAN
JV had another fine outing, tying for Champion with the Key School and Barrie School. Talk about close; we break the tie by looking at the points for the 4th top rider. In this case, Barrie had only 3 riders, so they did not have a 4th highest rider. Key school's 4th highest rider had 3 points. So we came in behind these two, but not by much!

Search and Help Holy Child at the Same Time

Online shopping for holiday items can help Holy Child. All you need to do is search for items through GoodSearch/GoodShop; we have partnered with them for the past few years to generate funds without pain for you and the school.

How much money could this generate for my school? Fifty percent of the revenue generated from the sponsored search advertisers on GoodSearch is shared with the charity, school or nonprofit organization--just indicate Holy Child as the recipient. Even though it's just around a penny a search, when you're shopping for items, they can add up quickly. (FYI: image, video, Yellow Pages, and site-specific searches are not included.) The school receives checks each year form the Good Search organization. It’s easy to register – do some “good” for Holy Child! www.goodsearch.com
